Three Great Afternoons – Cheyenne’s Wild West Museums
Cheyenne and Wyoming both have rich history. Several museums in Cheyenne give visitors an intriguing view of the peoples and events that have shaped the West. Here are three of our favorites:
- Wyoming State Museum, 2301 Central Avenue: Permanent exhibits include a historic overview of the National Park Service in Wyoming, home to 6 NPS sites; an extensive collection of Native American artifacts; displays and showcasing common wildlife; information about the state’s mining industry; and the story of fossil discovery in Wyoming, including a full-sized Camptosaurus skeleton. Hands-on exhibits and a scavenger hunt engage even very young children in Wyoming history. From September through May, the first Saturday of the month offers free programming with different themes.
- Cheyenne Depot Plaza, 121 W. 15th Street: The cultural hub of Cheyenne, this area includes the Cheyenne Frontier Days Old West Museum, the Cheyenne Depot Museum, and is the starting point for the Cheyenne Big Boots exhibit that spans the city. The plaza itself includes a number of statues and is a gathering place for locals and visitors alike. The Frontier Days Old West Museum includes a display of historic carriages and an extensive Western art collection. The Depot Museum tells the story of the construction of the Transcontinental Railroad, the Union Pacific Depot and the Railroad it is named after. The Union Pacific Main Yard can be viewed at the west end of the Depot – a great draw for railroad enthusiasts.
- Nelson Museum of the West, 1714 Carey Avenue: Founded by collector Robert L. Nelson, this museum’s collection totals over 14,000 items, including a 4,000 book library. Permanent displays include the United States Cavalry exhibit, the studio of artist Burt Procter, a 19th century Wyoming Cattle Baron's room, Fine and Fancy Firearms, high art of the Plains Indians, trophy animals of the world, Historical Firearms, and much more. Cowboy, Charro, Art, Native American and Military aspects of the west are represented in spur, saddle, firearm, and artifacts, sharing the story of the Old West.
